Packaging Innovations 2016: Food packaging and an icy cold product which could be red hot

PACKAGING Innovations 2016 will be an opportunity for Sirane to showcase our food packaging range - but also demonstrate an ‘icy cold’ product which could be red hot.

The show – which runs from February 24-25 and incorporates Contract Pack and Eco Pack – is the UK’s largest packaging show, and focuses on developments across the supply chain.

And we have some great developments to share, including a major development in anti-microbial food packaging and an exciting new product ‘hot off the press’ – Cold-Snap - that allows someone to create an ‘instantly ice-cold’ cool pack just by adding water…

Jeremy Haydn-Davies, sales director, said: “Packaging Innovations is always a popular and busy event, and this year we’ve decided to make the focus of our stand food packaging, and we’ll also be sharing ‘Cold-Snap’, so there’ll be lots to see on the stand.

Food packaging is a significant part of Sirane’s business, and we’ve got some stunning innovations to share at Packaging Innovations, including anti-microbial packaging which can be used to extend the shelf-life of meat, fish and poultry as well as soft & delicate fruits.

“We’ll also have some samples of ‘Cold-Snap’ to demonstrate. This is very new technology, still in the developmental stage to some extent, but it is well worth a look. ‘Cold-Snap’ can be used in two ways, either add water/break a seal and shake it for instant ‘ice-cold’, or it can be frozen overnight for a longer-lasting cold which lasts for a number of hours.

“It’s got lots of potential, from instant drink coolers to medical ice packs, so we would invite anyone who might be interested in this kind of technology to pay a visit to our stand.”

Our anti-microbial pads for fruit were very well received earlier in the year at Fruit Logistica in Berlin, and at Packaging Innovations we’ll also be showing the meat/poultry version.

Sirane’s new Dri-Fresh ABV pads for fruit and ABM pads for meat, fish & poultry contain a blend of natural bio-flavonoids and organic acids which work together to extend shelf-life. Together with the absorbency within the pad, they offer an outstanding level of protection.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “There are obvious differences between meat, poultry, fish and fruit, in terms of the way they degrade and what causes the degradation to happen.

“However, there are also similarities meaning we’ve been able to modify the technology and the solutions we have developed to cover differing markets. Soft-fruit, with little in the way of protective skin, is vulnerable to fungal and bacterial degradation. Similarly, with meat, fish and particularly poultry, reducing microbes and bacteria can be hugely beneficial.

“These benefits are not only the physical appearance and extended shelf-life of the product, they can also be enhanced food safety, again particularly relevant to the poultry market.

“The combination of flavonoids which are anti-oxidants and anti-microbial, with organic acids including citric acid and ascorbic acids is harmless, as all elements are found naturally within fruit. It is clean, simple, and effective. Nature itself often has the answers.

“This complements our existing shelf-life extending technologies, including odour-absorbing pads, absorbent cushioned pads, anti-fungal pads, ethylene-absorbing pads and labels and more – and it is perfect for soft and delicate fruit, poultry and seafood.

“People have tried, and failed, in the past, to make anti-microbial packaging… but the major difference here is the method of delivery. With the anti-microbial integrated into the pad, and activated only when needed, it gets efficiently to the heart of the problem.”

US cooking bag distributor adds retail pack to its range
