SIRANE’S Siralon range – nylon food packaging for the oven, microwave or sous-vide –allows food to be packed, shipped, sold and cooked in the same packaging.

And nylon is a very versatile material – it can also be used for hot-fill, roasting bread crumbs and spices, for the disposal of hot cooking oil, and lining catering trays and pans.

The Sira-Cook Siralon absorbent bag/film range is a unique nylon packaging solution for meat, fish and poultry or even vegetables which can even be run down a flow-wrapper.

Siralon has three grades on offer – Siralon 10, Siralon 12 and Siralon 21.

Siralon 10 offers flow-wrap films or bags for microwave/low temperature cooking such as steaming packs, cook and hot-hold & sous-vide, and is temperature resistant up to 180OC. The material can even be cooked sous-vide and then roasted in the same pack.  

Siralon 12 bags are perfect for roasting joints of meat, poultry, whole fish etc and are perfect for retailers looking to pack, ship, sell and cook the product in one package.                         

Siralon 21 offers a flow-wrap material/bags for whole joints of meat, poultry or whole fish. The easy-to-seal nylon material is strong, offers good clarity, offers a good barrier and can be vacuum packed. Siralon 21 is temperature resistant up to 210OC.

Nylon’s durability, suitability for elevated-temperature use, and cleanliness as a material, make it suitable for a number of other applications – particularly in food service/catering.

One property of nylon that can be particularly useful in food production is its hot-fill capabilities– and hot-fill liners can be made large enough for industrial use. Similarly, Hot-Shortening Bags allow cooking oil to be poured in while hot, for subsequent disposal.

Siralon is also suitable for catering liners – keeping trays clean and reducing wear and tear as well as being non-stick, so reducing the amount of food wasted. Liners are available in all the standard Gastronorm sizes and can even be frozen with the food in them.

And nylon can be used in a number of other food-service applications, including industrial roasting bags for bread crumbs and spices, bread bags for par-baked bread and more.

Odour-absorbent meat pads from Sirane food packaging

SIRANE’S odour-absorbent meat pads – part of our extensive range of absorbent meat pads – are a food packaging solution which has been proven to reduce returns in vac-packed meat/poultry where confinement odour is an issue.

Dri-Fresh Fresh-Hold OA pads are suitable for packaging meats including lamb, pork, gammon, beef & poultry. These absorbent pads incorporate odour absorbency, and stop customers wrongly believing food is off due to unpleasant smells.

This food is often returned to the store, and confinement odour can cost the industry millions of pounds a year.

Jeremy Haydn-Davies, sales director, said: “Returns are a significant industry-wide issue for vacuum-packed meats such as beef, poultry, lamb, gammon and pork – as unpleasant odours can cause customers to wrongly think food has gone off.

“However, tests on Dri-Fresh Fresh-Hold OA pads show the product has alleviated the problem. The odour-absorbent pads absorb vapours and odours – even when saturated in blood and juices – making the product much more attractive.”

Simon Balderson, Sirane’s managing director, said: “Although vacuum packaging is an effective way to provide shelf life at low cost, the odour released from the pack when it is opened has proven to be a major problem for food retailers.

“The odour, known as ‘confinement odour’, is sometimes compared to that of sour milk or cheese. On occasions, particularly for meat with higher pH, the odour can be sulphurous.

“Confinement odour is caused by natural bacterial activity in the pack and it disperses fairly quickly after the pack is opened.

“Although the odour does not indicate that the meat is unsuitable for consumption, consumers are understandably alarmed and often return the product to the retailer.

“Our odour-absorbent meat pad removes the volatiles responsible for confinement odour from the package atmosphere.”

Across the industry it is estimated 8% of all vac-packed meat is returned to the store.

The Dri-Fresh Fresh-Hold OA products are also ideal for MAP and skin packaging and are manufactured under BRC and ISO9001 conditions at Sirane’s Telford premises.
