NPD: Give Sirane your food packaging problems to solve

Smart Release: an example of customer-driver NPD

NEW product development is at the heart of Sirane – and we’re looking for food packaging projects and problems to solve to keep our team busy during 2018.

Many of our more popular food packaging solutions were customer-driven solutions – based on a need in the market and a problem that simply needed solving.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Our development team will help you take the product from just the germ of an idea through to full-scale manufacture. As a company, we thrive on problem solving and finding innovative solutions.

“If you’ve a problem within your food packaging but don’t know how to solve it – or you know the solution needed but need someone to make it happen – then either way, having a conversation with Sirane could be the first step to take.

“Sirane is constantly trying to solve the problems that exist in food packaging, particularly in relation to shelf-life and food waste, but we can only solve problems that we’re aware of, so if you think we could help, make sure we’re aware.”

Sirane’s core skills are founded around material science and design & process engineering which gives us the capability to develop new and better products for food packaging, the medical & healthcare industry, horticulture and industry, and if required manufacture new machinery to produce these products.

Products recently developed as customer-driven solutions include: odour-absorbent meat pads for vac-packed meat, developed to combat confinement odour; cushioned absorbent pads for soft and delicate fruits in transportation, and multi-compartment steam-cooking bags for microwave which open during cooking.

Jeremy Haydn-Davies, sales director, said: “These are all good examples of products which were developed as a direct result of a problem within the packaging that was on the market which meant it didn’t quite work for the supply chain.

“Confinement odour, a build-up of odours which is quite natural with meat such as lamb, was so off-putting for consumers when they opened the pack they wrongly believed the meat was off – Sirane was able to find a solution to this.

“Similarly, putting seafood and sauce in a sealed bag for retail sale wasn’t always working, as the sauce was causing degradation of the fish and limiting shelf-life – a multi-compartment bag with a valve which opens during cooking was the answer.”

BAGS OF IDEAS: Oven-ready packaging perfect for roast turkeys

RoastingBagTurkey

A READY-TO-COOK packaging solution that can also be flow-wrapped – nylon is the perfect Christmas present for anyone looking to cook a turkey for Christmas Day.

Nylon is a terrific material for cooking meat in. With a whole bird such as turkey it will retain all the juices and flavours, aid browning of the meat, and reduce cooking times.

It can be flow-wrapped, vac-packed or used as bags with ties – meaning no matter what the scale of your packing operation, you can offer your customers the benefits of nylon.

Sirane MD, Simon Balderson, said: “Siralon was a world’s first. A revolutionary new nylon-based bag or film, suitable for the oven or microwave, it has one crucial difference – it can be heat-sealed on a flow-wrapper – which means mass production can still use nylon.

“Nylon truly is the best ovenable packaging format for a roast that there is. It doesn’t go brittle, like many other materials, and its absorbent qualities will help with browning. The juices all stay within the bag, so the meat won’t dry out – all in all it’s perfect.

“Siralon can be cooked at higher temperatures to the traditional alternatives, which means that cooking times can be significantly reduced, especially on larger cuts or whole birds.

“And most importantly, meats cooked within nylon packaging always taste delicious. Nylon could be the perfect Christmas present for both retailers and consumers.”

Nylon has long-been accepted as the best material for oven-roasting bags, but until Sirane’s new blend was created it was simply not been possible to use it on a flow-wrapper.

It is perfect for whole birds such as turkey or chicken, as well as lamb, beef, and pork – indeed any bird or cut of meat. It can also be used for seafood, particularly whole fish.

Sirane is a highly innovative packaging product development-to-manufacture company based in Telford, Shropshire. It has four divisions: food packaging; medical and healthcare; industrial and horticultural, and a number of agents and distributors across the world.
