BAGS OF IDEAS: Our oven/BBQ bag could help you capture the barbecue market

Oven/BBQ cooking bags from Sirane

IF YOU’RE looking for a bag which can be cooked on a barbecue or in the oven, then Sirane’s Sira-Cook Supreme could just be the product you’ve been searching for.

Sirane’s oven/BBQ bag is a very versatile product and comes with a range of options which make it the perfect cooking bag for people looking to sell into the barbeque sector.

With options including individually-packed sachets for meal-kits, a non-stick layer, heat-sealable, a self-seal closure, a range of sizes, and even sachets of herbs and spices which flavour the food, it’s a versatile bag which could just give you the edge.

Simon Balderson, Sirane managing director, said: “However cold it may be outside, many food producers and retailers will be starting to think about the summer. Our Sira-Cook Supreme cooking bag has so many potential uses for anyone looking to capitalise on the barbecue market – and offers numerous advantages to users, not least the fact that the consumer can cook in the oven instead if the weather doesn’t hold out.

“It is a foil bag capable of withstanding significant direct heat, allowing for its use on a barbecue as well as in an oven. The food will be tender, retain all the juices and flavours as well as the goodness, and could be sold over the counter in the pack.

“For the customer there would be no mess, no smell, and no need to handle the food. The bag can be heat-sealed or folded-over and can add genuine value to retail food sales.

“We’ve also developed a self-seal version of the bag perfect for over-the-counter sales. We’ve also got individually-wrapped bags – offering an ideal ‘BBQ meal-kit’ solution – the customer just opens the pack, puts the product in the bag and cooks, simple as that.”

The bag is available in a range of sizes and in a standard and non-stick version. It comes with a clear top panel – so users can see what’s being cooked – and can be heat-sealed.

It is perfect for meat, fish, poultry and vegetables – anything that can be cooked in an oven or on a barbecue can be cooked in this bag – and it means people will no longer have to cook separately for meat-eaters and vegetarians, as the bags can sit side by side.

We’ve also got our new flavoured cooking bag options. The new addition uses a blend of kilned beech mixed with frozen herbs and spices, which are placed in a sachet and slipped below the bag’s siliconized layer, allowing the flavours to transfer during cooking.

Jeremy Haydn-Davies, sales director for food packaging, said: “The range of sizes offered mean we can offer Sira-Cook Supreme as a solution for numerous products. Our oven/BBQ cooking bag has so much potential in so many areas of the retail supply chain. But using the bag as a ‘’bag of flavour’ could really help retailers offer a truly stand-out product.”

We’ve six flavour combinations as standard: onion, mustard & spices; rosemary, juniper & spices; garlic, ginger & spices; mustard, sweet basil & spices; bay leaf, onion and spices, and juniper, pine cone and spices. However, other flavour combinations can be developed.

“We’ve some interesting flavours on offer, with the potential to create bespoke flavours for individual customers, so this product has lots of potential – it is very exciting for us.”

“Whether you’re looking to cook a small fillet of fish or a medley of vegetables, Sira-Cook Supreme is the answer – and we’ve managed to make our prices incredibly competitive,” added Jeremy Haydn-Davies, “and other options such as our new folded, packed and sealed (FPS) allow individual packs to be supplied for use as part of DIY meal kits.”

Sira-Cook Supreme bags are also part of the Thinking-Cooking portfolio – Sirane’s retail kitchen and cooking range – allowing bags to be stocked as a stand-alone product.

EARTH PACKAGING: Compostable packaging solutions that won’t ‘cost the earth’

PACKAGING Innovations will see the launch of Sirane’s Earth Packaging range – compostable food packaging solutions that won’t ‘cost the earth’.

Sirane’s compostable Earth Packaging solutions can really help you boost your green credentials by cutting both packaging waste and food waste.

And a new environmentally friendly stand up pouch, which can be recycled and is compostable – the Earthpouch – should generate some real excitement.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “The market has been crying out for years for a pouch that is free of plastic, is recyclable and is compostable. The Earthpouch, which was launched just after Christmas, is made from a paper with a 100% plastic free heat-sealable coating which is then formed into a preformed stand-up pouch which provides total food security for dry and moist food products.”

Environmentally-friendly packaging is in the news at the moment – particularly following Iceland’s recent ‘plastic free’ commitment - as is reducing food waste, but what if your packaging can actively help contribute to both goals.

Simon Balderson added, said: “The correct food packaging can help to extend the shelf-life of produce, be it meat, seafood, or fresh fruit and vegetables, and it is possible to supply packaging solutions which are also 100% compostable.

“It’s not one or the other, packaging can be environmentally friendly and effective.”

Compostable food packaging from Sirane includes our breathable bags and films for extending the life of fresh produce. Sira-Flex Resolve is a natural biopolymer which we can make into bags or films, and which can extend shelf-life by many days.

Sirane’s Sira-Flex™ Resolve® is a unique plant-based breathable film developed to have the optimum balance between humidity control and O2 and CO2 permeability.

The permeability is temperature dependant so that the perfect atmosphere is maintained inside the pack even if the storage temperature is variable.

Simon Balderson, Sirane’s managing director, said: “The results are remarkable. There is no condensation on the inside of the film and the product does not dry out.

“The package atmosphere is maintained with the optimum balance of atmospheric gases to prevent degradation. In simple terms, the food lasts longer – but of course in packaging terms it’s fully compostable, so it ticks the green boxes.

“Shelf life extension of several days and more is achieved for many products. The film is suitable for all types of vegetables including salads as well as fresh fruit.”

Other compostable products include our absorbent pads for meat, poultry, seafood and fruit. Many of our Dri-Fresh absorbent products can be offered in compostable form – under the name Dri-Fresh Resolve; for Sirane Resolve = compostable.

Jeremy Haydn-Davies, Sirane sales director, said: “Absorbent products can contribute significantly to a product’s ultimate shelf-life; they are there for a reason. But if going green is your aim, they can in most cases be supplied as a compostable product.

“Integrating anti-microbial or anti-bacterial technology, for example, can help extend the shelf-life even further, helping to achieve food waste reduction targets.”

Food waste topped the industry’s agenda in 2017 thanks to Courtauld 2025.

Courtauld 2025 is a 10-year voluntary agreement that brings together organisations across the food chain – from producer through to consumer – to make food and drink production and consumption more sustainable.

Among its targets are a 20% reduction in food waste in the UK.

Sirane also offers compostable packaging for plants/flowers, including compostable bags and films, and compostable plant pots, as part of our horticultural range.
