PROTECTIVE packaging and ready-to-cook packaging solutions for meat and poultry from Sirane generated plenty of interest at IFFA – Europe’s largest meat trade show.
And an absorbent pad which has incorporated anti-microbial technology into the pad, helping to extend shelf-life, proved to be of major interest, particularly to poultry companies, while ready-cook solutions including nylon also proved to be very popular.
The six-day show in Frankfurt, Germany, broke records – with more than 63,000 visitors from 143 different countries – an increase of 5% on the attendance at the 2013 show.
Jeremy Haydn-Davies, sales director, said: “IFFA was another successful show, and we certainly welcomed people to the stand from a number of different countries.
“Sirane’s always been able to offer something a little bit different, be it anti-microbial packaging, printed steam-cooking bags, or ovenable absorbent pads, and in many cases we were able to show potential customers something they’d truly never seen before.
“Anti-microbial packaging created a bit of a stir, and a number of companies will be looking at arranging shelf-life trials. There was also some genuine excitement about the range of oven and microwave-ready packaging we can offer, with many samples taken.”
IFFA was only the second show at which we’d exhibited our new anti-microbial absorbent pads – following on from the Seafood Global Expo in Brussels in late April.
Simon Balderson, Sirane managing director, said: “Our new Dri-Fresh ABM technology contains a blend of natural bio-flavonoids and organic acids which can be used very effectively to extend the shelf-life of meat and poultry, and remove problem bacteria.
“At IFFA, ABM was something completely new – not available from any other exhibitor, and so it is not surprising that we had interest in the product from around the world. Problems in the food supply chain are the same the world over, as a show like IFFA demonstrated.
“With ABM the combination of flavonoids which are anti-oxidants and anti-microbial, with organic acids including citric acid and ascorbic acids is harmless, as all elements are found naturally within fruit. It is activated by moisture, so only begins to function when needed.
“People have tried, and failed, in the past, to make anti-microbial packaging… but the major difference here is the method of delivery. With the anti-microbial technology integrated into the pad, and activated only when needed, it gets efficiently to the heart of the problem.”
Sirane manufactures a wide range of absorbent pads for meat and poultry, including standard absorbency, odour-absorbency and ovenable absorbent pads. ABM technology can be incorporated into most of the absorbent pads with the company’s Dri-Fresh range.
Jeremy Haydn-Davies, sales director, added: “We offer absorbent pads in a wide range of colours, sizes, and levels of absorbency, and Sirane will tailor the absorbent pad to your requirements, so that you’re not paying for something that you just don’t need.
“We’re also a development company, so we’re constantly looking to help people improve their packaging and solve problems. A few years ago, for example, we introduced a pad which absorbs odours, and solved the problem of confinement odour in Vac-packed meat.
“This led to significant drops in returns for some customers using this pad, as consumers were no-longer opening the pack and wrongly believing that the meat was off.”
The company also offers a range of cooking solutions, including nylon materials for roasting, oven/microwave steam-cooking bags, BBQ bags, sous-vide and more. Recent developments include ‘smoking bag’ technology which flavours the food during the cooking process.
In addition, Sirane can offer many more products for the meat & poultry trade, such as boneguard (including sticky), absorbent crepe (including shaped & folded), ovenable (& also non-ovenable) dividers for trays, and our new range of protective shank caps.
