ENARIS: Health Minister visits to discuss NHS procurement – his first to a UK manufacturer in the healthcare sector

Minister of State for Health Philip Dunne during a visit to Sirane

MINISTER of State for Health Philip Dunne visited Sirane and Enaris yesterday (Thursday) to find out for himself the experiences of a UK manufacturer selling into the NHS.

Mr Dunne, MP for Ludlow, has responsibility for areas including NHS procurement, and the government minister was keen to discover Enaris’ experiences.

It has his first ministerial visit under ‘procurement’ and his first to a UK manufacturer as health minister – and one which he found to be ‘hugely valuable’. He later tweeted “Impressed by innovation in cost efficient absorbent products for medical use developed and manufactured by @SiraneLtd SME in Telford.”

Simon Balderson, group MD, said: “Having recently been successfully in securing a NHS Framework agreement via NHS Supply Chain for the supply of an anti-slip absorbent floor mat, we had an open and frank discussion about ‘selling to the NHS’.

“Anyone who’s ever been involved with selling anything into the NHS will understand the complexity involved, and the challenges faced, and Mr Dunne was interested to hear from a UK manufacturer how they have found those obstacles.

“He was also keen to stress that changes are afoot which will alleviate many of the issues manufacturers are currently battling against when selling to the health service.

“I think the Minister was also genuinely interested to hear about an innovative company which from small beginnings is now selling to more than 70 countries.”

Discussions also included Brexit – and the impact it has had on the company, both positive and negative, as well as Sirane’s future expansion plans.

Mr Dunne was then given a tour of the factory by Simon and Enaris MD, Jeremy Haydn-Davies, where he could see some of the products in question being made.

Enaris is the new name for Sirane’s medical and healthcare division.

Enaris was launched in March to service medical, laboratory, dental, care-home, emergency and veterinary sectors. It has drawn on Sirane’s expertise in areas including absorbency and material science – as well as from listening to the needs of the healthcare industry – to create a varied  portfolio of products.

Other products manufactured by Enaris include absorbent tourniquet limb drapes, compliant specimen transportation packaging including 95 kPa bags, and products such as emergency spill-control pads and incontinence sheets.

ENARIS: Health minister among visitors to our stand as Enaris swamped with inquiries at first exhibition

Philip Dunne, Minister of State for Health, was among the visitors to the Enaris stand

ENARIS was inundated with inquiries at the Health Plus Care Show with our absorbent products proving very popular, especially for medical and care-home sectors.

And among the visitors to the stand was Philip Dunne, Minister of State for Health, who was impressed to see a UK manufacturer offering such a level of innovation.

The Health Plus Care show is tagged as the show ‘where innovation meets inspiration’ and was a chance for Enaris - the new name for Sirane Medical and Healthcare - to showcase products to a targeted audience – and also meet people interested in helping develop new products.

Jeremy Haydn-Davies, Enaris MD, said: “Philip Dunne was one of many visitors to our stand who left impressed by our product offerings and level of expertise. The Health Plus Care show in London proved to be a very successful first show for us.

“We had many enquiries for our absorbent floor mats – especially with them being anti-slip – as people saw their potential for use in a care-home environment. We also had lots of interest in our absorbent products for use as incontinence protection.

“We also had many other products on display, all of which generated interest.”

Product manufacturing, expertise and product development are the foundations on which Enaris is built, meaning Health Plus Care in London was a perfect match for us. Enaris was launched in March in a bid to take our expertise in absorbency and material science into the healthcare sector and develop a range of new products.

Health Plus Care took place at the ExCel Arena, London, from June 28-29, and is Europe’s largest integrated health and care event, with a range of seminars and conferences taking place in the same venue alongside the show.

The Health Plus Care show ended an exciting few months for Enaris – the new name for Sirane Medical & Healthcare - since its launch in March of this year.

Products manufactured by Enaris include anti-slip disposable absorbent floor mats used in NHS operating theatres, compliant specimen transportation packaging including 95 kPa bags, and products such as spill pads and incontinence sheets.

The anti-slip disposable absorbent floor mat was developed with the safety of the user in mind, and is used in operating theatre, scrub areas etc. It was designed to grip to the floor when wet, and can be thrown onto already wet surfaces.

The product is now available to purchase via the NHS Supply Chain.

Another product developed for use in operating theatres was the absorbent tourniquet knee/shoulder drape, developed with input and advice from surgeons.

The company has a diverse product range, with products also including Cellosene absorbent wadding, BenchSafe spillage protection, and DiffX non-chlorine disinfection. Enaris.co.uk is split up into six sectors: medical; lab; dental; care; emergency, and veterinary – to help customers easily find what they need.

James Hemmings is the Enaris National Sales Manager, while Jonathan Mason is Business Development Manager. For more information on any product, contact James Hemmings on 07483 984622 or Jonathan Mason on 07837 047648.

Two innovative companies have announced a formal link up in a bid to take new and exciting food packaging technologies to new markets in Ireland.

Sirane – a Shropshire-based company at the forefront of developing new and innovative food packaging solutions – has joined forces with Fispak, a Dublin-based food packaging and ingredients supplier, who will act as an agent in Ireland.

Simon Balderson, Sirane managing director, said: “Fispak are an innovative food solutions company and are a perfect partner to take Sirane’s products into the Irish market.

“Their experience and market presence in Ireland should allow both Sirane and Fispak to grow their business and take innovative packaging to many new customers.”

Fintan Flood, Fispak director, said: “Fispak Ltd has long been established in Ireland as a leading provider of packaging and ingredients, supplying to food producers and retailers for over 40 years. This link-up with Sirane will help us build on this.

“Through hard work, dedication and a passion for customer service, we have expanded our product portfolio to encompass a wide range of packaging and ingredients for supply to the food industry. Linking with Sirane will allow us to offer an even larger portfolio of products.

Sirane support for Love Food Hate Waste campaign

Love Food Hate Waste  Love Food Hate Waste

Sirane is proud to support WRAP's Love Food Hate Waste campaign - a campaign launched in 2007 by WRAP to help UK households recognise and tackle food waste.

Since its launch, millions of people have responded, saving around £1.5 billion worth of food.

The programme launch brought the issue of food waste to the fore - around 8 million tonnes of food and drink wasted per year, around £12 billion cost to households and the environmental consequences.

Love Food Hate Waste works with retailers and brands, local authorities, businesses, community and campaign groups to help promote the LFHW message by providing resources such as well-researched tips, recipes, messages, creatives and consumer insights.

Retailers and brands have already helped their customers reduce food waste, for example Sainsbury’s ‘Love Your Leftovers’ and Morrison’s ‘Great Taste Less Waste’ campaigns, the introduction of improved labelling (removing ‘display until’ dates from their products), pack sizes that are better suited to today’s households and promotions that give consumers more flexibility to use up the food they buy.

Sirane has always been keen to do its bit to help reduce waste throughout the supply chain. From odour-absorbing pads which have cut wastage in vac-packed meat though to shelf-life extending bags and films, Sirane constantly innovates to help suppliers, retailers and consumers reduce their food waste. Our Dri-Fresh range includes absorbent solutions to help with shelf-life extension right through the supply chain, while our Sira-Flex range offers packaging solutions for enhancing freshness.

The issue of food and drink waste has moved up the UK political and social agenda in recent years, spurred on by research which WRAP has carried out into the amount and types of food and drink wasted.

Research suggests that in the UK as a whole we waste approximately 11 million tonnes of food per year. Householders are responsible for around 7.2 million tonnes and the food and drink supply chain wastes at least 3 million tonnes*.

Approximately two-thirds of all food and drink waste is avoidable - food and drink that was edible at some point prior to being thrown away (for example a slice of bread, an apple or a slice of ham). The remaining third is split equally between possibly avoidable - food and drink that some people eat and others do not (for example bread crusts and potato skins) and unavoidable food waste.

If reducing food waste is something your company is keen to play a part in, Sirane could help you fulfill your targets. For more information, contact sales@sirane.com or call +44 1952 230055
