Find us at the Digital Seafood Meeting 2021

SIRANE will be taking part in the Digital Seafood Meeting 2021 – an online industry ‘meet-up’ organised by the team behind the Fish International trade show.

Sales Manager Karl Heggarty, and Marketing Manager Mark Lingard will both be available on the day, for anyone who wants to know more about Sirane’s ‘seafood offering’.

Sirane has food packaging ranges that cover the whole seafood journey, from liners and mats for crate of fresh fish, right through to microwaveable ready-cook packaging.

Jeremy Haydn-Davies, sales director, said: “Sirane’s expertise in absorbency, oven and microwave-ready packaging materials and shelf-life means that wherever you fit within the supply chain, we are a company that has products perfect for you.

“From sea to plate and everywhere in between… whether you are catching and processing the fish, or selling it as a retailer, Sirane’s range of packaging solutions can make a huge difference, whether to shelf-life, product presentation or even profitability.

“Whether it’s absorbency for the fresh catch straight from the boat, or a steam-cooking bag for over-the-counter retail sales of fish food, Sirane has the answers in our range.”

Our two most recent product launches for the seafood industry have been Dri-Fresh Sea-Fresh SP – an absorbent crate liner with excellent wet-strength and which uses no adhesives – and Dri-Fresh Sea-Fresh Ice-Mats, mats which can be used to cover live seafood and maintain a steady release of fresh water to help optimise its condition.

Perfect for crustaceans, such as lobster and crab, the product remains chilled under the Ice-Mat, and the water’s staggered release means the product remains in a premium condition.

Sirane’s Dri-Fresh Sea-Fresh range of absorbent liners – Sea-Fresh SP being the newest addition - quickly and effectively absorbs the melting ice and juices released during transportation. The liquid is absorbed and trapped inside the Sea-Fresh liner to prevent spillage and reduce odour – increasing the saleability of the seafood.

Other innovative solution including microwave cooking bags, barbecue bags, and nylon that can be flow-wrapped will be on show at the Fish International in Bremen.

Jeremy Haydn-Davies, sales director for food packaging, said: “Our barbecue bag is perfect for seafood. The Sira-Cook Supreme bag is also ovenable – which might be a distinct advantage with the unreliable British climate – and allows a product with the sauce to be thrown on the barbecue. It’s a simple solution, offering stunning taste.

“Our bag comes with a non-stick layer, meaning the fish won’t stick to the bag. We can even perforate the layer and add flavours below, that permeate during cooking.

“Anyone involved in seafood and who is looking to add genuine value to their products should come and see us at our stand in Bremen and find out what we can offer.

The bag is available in a number of sizes – including a large bag big enough to take a whole salmon - and in a standard and non-stick version perfect for seafood. It comes with a clear top panel – so users can see what’s being cooked – and the bag can be heat-sealed.

Steam-cooking bags are also a popular product in the seafood sector. Bags can be provided in a range of formats, including self-seal, multi-compartment and stand-up, as well as in a range of colours. We can also custom print/custom brand the bags.

We also offer thermally-insulated products, including standard bags and anti-microbial bags- which are recyclable, and can also be custom printed/branded as required.

And we have recently added Cargo-Fresh – an absorbent material which is the perfect solution for anyone transporting perishable goods, such as seafood, by air.

The Digital Seafood Meeting is the online version of Fish International for 2021 – the show is held in Bremen every two years and sees 300 exhibitors and 12,000 industry visitors

It will take place on April 21 - visit https://fish-international-digital-2021.b2match.io/

Sirane's Earthwedge has been nominated for a Sammie award

SIRANE’S new plastic-free, recyclable sandwich pack has been shortlisted for an environmental award in the British Sandwich Industry Awards, The Sammies.

The Earthwedge has been shortlisted by the judges who are looking at – and for evidence of - work done to reduce the sector’s impact on the environment.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Our Earthwedge has been in development for some time, and its rewarding to have that work recognised in this way.

“Traditional sandwich packs are difficult or impossible to recycle, PE-coated and laminated packs invariably end up in landfill, despite any claims on the packs, and this is a chance to really offer the market a genuinely recyclable alternative.“

The other five shortlisted companies/products are Cauli Ltd (Cauli Box); M&S (M&S Skillet); Around Noon (Reducing carbon footprint); Boots (Remove of plastic cutlery), and Deli Lites (Reducing their environmental impact).

Sirane will have two different types of sandwich packs on offer – heat-sealable, for use in commercial sandwich packing, and tabbed for use in delis/sandwich shops where the packs are made up and sold the same day.

Rigorous testing has been done on the packs to make sure they offer the shelf-life required for use in commercial operations as well as running on machines.

Our tabbed Earthwedge will soon be added to our Field & Fare site, where customers will be able to buy direct for use in their own sandwich shops etc.

The Earthwedge has been developed using a combination of coated boards and papers. This means that the whole pack can be recycled as part of the paper stream.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Our Earth Packaging range now includes many ways to replace plastics effectively in the supply chain. Many plastics can be replaced, and new materials and technologies are coming on board all the time.

“Earthwedge is a great example of somewhere it is possible to remove the plastic entirely whilst allowing the product to still be functional and fit for purpose. And end of life is important – these packs will be able to go in with the paper recycling.

“We’ve put them through extensive trials, to make sure they offer the necessary ease of use as well as the needed shelf-life. Coated boards are used for a reason – commercially the sandwiches need a certain shelf-life to make the supply chain work – but we can now offer a viable alternative which is environmentally friendly.”

They are suitable for heat-sealing as well as in-store assembly and can be supplied fully printed/branded or plain, as required, in standard and custom sizes.

The whole pack can be easily recycled in the paper stream – there’s no need to try to separate layers, or remove films from the pack, a system which makes some packs on the market technically recyclable but practically impossible to do so.

Sirane is an innovative packaging development-to-manufacture company, with expertise in absorbency and material science. Specialisms include board, bags and pouches, absorbent products, shelf-life extension and dual-ovenable products.

The Sammies 2021 are organised by the British Sandwich & Food to Go Association. All of the category winners will be announced in May. For more information on the awards, click here.
