CFIA has been cancelled for 2020

CFIA in Rennes has been cancelled just days before the doors were due to open – due to new restrictions in France on indoor gatherings of more than 1,000 people.

The Rennes show – one of the biggest dates in the French food industry calendar with 20,000+ visitors – will now take place from June 8-10, 2021.

It had been due to open in just five days’ time – on Tuesday, September 29.

Sirane was due to exhibit at the show – and we had plenty of exciting developments to share, so if you were planning to visit us at the show, why not get in touch…

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “While it is disappointing CFIA had to be cancelled it was perhaps inevitable. CFIA is a great show, and we were looking forward to it.

“We have plenty of exciting developments to share, so be sure to check our website or contact our colleagues on the French desk to find out the latest news.”

Sirane recently hit the news in France with a salad packaging solution developed by us as part of a project working with some major brands in the country.

(RE)SET Packaging are a consultancy company specialised in the circular economy, who looked worldwide for the most innovative providers of sustainable packaging working in the food sector. Carrefour and LSDH (owners of the Les Crudettes salad brand) signed up to an ambitious pact, with Carrefour promising to make all packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.

Sirane was among the innovative packaging suppliers shortlisted to work on potential solutions – and nine months on the plastic-free packaging solution is the first potential (RE)SET Packaging product launch on the horizon.

Our Earthfilm Fresh salad bags are the latest in a long list of innovations from Sirane, with an emphasis in recent years on eco-friendly & sustainable packaging.

We have our award-winning plastic-free Earthpouch and flow-wrap film Earthfilm, and new board-based developments including our recyclable sandwich packs Earthwedge. We also have some exciting news coming soon about salmon boards…

Another recent development is our RePEat film – a recyclable PE film with a range of barrier options – offering an alternative where paper-based packaging isn’t suitable.

And of course, we would be happy to discuss our traditional packaging range, including absorbency, ovenable bags and films, microwave susceptor and more.

CFIA was originally scheduled for March but was postponed until June 2020 in the early days of the pandemic due to restrictions in France on indoor public gatherings. A new date in Nantes was then found for September, before organisers found a way to move it back to Rennes – with dates set for September 29-October1.

Sirane is expanded into an additional unit, which will house a water-based printing press along with other machines

INNOVATIVE packaging specialists Sirane have made a million-pound plus investment by expanding into a new unit that will also see the installation of an environmentally friendly water-based printing press.

The Telford-based packaging development & manufacturing company, which specialises in absorbent materials, bags, pouches & films and board products, has taken an additional 32,000 sq ft.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “This is big news for us, as it will allow us to significantly expand our Telford operation, and give us the room to install new machinery, and to keep ahead of growing demand.

“Part of the expansion will include a state-of-the-art water-based print press, which should be installed in the unit with a couple of weeks.

“Not only will this allow us to bring much of our printing in house, but it will also mean we can offer a truly environmentally-friendly print service.”

The printing operation will, we believe, be the first in the UK to operate using solely water-based printing – meaning there is no solvents to be disposed of after printing, and no harmful emissions.

Peter Ralten, head of specialist packaging, said: “The new printing press will allow us to run a more environmentally-friendly printing, coating and converting operation, and has been driven by customers concerned about the environment and asking for a more sustainable solution.

“Using our paper-based packaging, Earthfilms and Earthpouch, we will be able to use water-based inks to offer what the market is demanding.”

The new unit – just a few doors down from our existing Telford site on – will also house a range of bag-making and pouch-making machines.

The expansion – and new jobs – are as a result of significant growth in both our food packaging and medical & healthcare divisions. In particular, there has been significant growth in our eco-friendly packaging films, and also in our medical specimen transportation range.

The expansion brings our total manufacturing space in Telford to around 140,000 sq ft. The company also has a site in Norbury, Staffordshire.

Earlier in 2020, Sirane acquired Olympic Packaging – now known as Sirane Stroud – which is a highly respected and successful manufacturer and converter of board products, based in Gloucestershire, supplying the bakery, fish and cake industries among others.

Sirane has four main divisions: food packaging; medical & healthcare; horticultural and industrial. The company has additional manufacturing in Guadalajara (Mexico), Wroclaw (Poland) and Moscow (Russia).
