ECO: Earth Packaging could be answer as government announces overhaul of UK packaging waste system

Earth Packaging - compostable, recyclable & sustainable

SIRANE’S Earth Packaging range could be one solution for food producers wondering how an overhaul of the UK packaging waste system will affect them.

Businesses in the UK today learnt they will pay the full cost of recycling of disposing of their packaging waste in a new strategy unveiled by the government.

The legal onus on footing the bill for damaging waste will shift to those producing it, while there will also be an attempt to bring in a consistent approach to recycling.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Sirane’s Earth Packaging range is consistent with exactly what the government’s proposing here. The packaging in this range is all either compostable or easily recyclable – any plastic is mono-layer.

“For example, our plastic-free Earthpouch is easily recyclable, it can go in with the paper. We have a range of absorbent pads which are either paper-based or are compostable, and our thermally-insulated bags contain a single plastic.

“Our aim with Earth Packaging was to offer a sustainable packaging source that fits with what the market actually needs. In many cases, particularly with food, the packaging is there for a very good reason… there’s no point reducing food packaging waste if it significantly increases the amount of food wasted.”

Key components of the Resources and Waste Strategy include:

Ensuring that producers pay the full net costs of disposal or recycling of packaging they place on the market by extending the responsibilities of producers

The introduction of a consistent set of recyclable materials which will be collected from all households and businesses, with consistency on labelling

Sirane’s Earth Packaging range – recyclable, compostable and sustainable packaging solutions – includes the multi award-winning plastic-free Earthpouch.

The Earthpouch – an industry first – is made from a paper with a 100% plastic free heat-sealable coating which is then formed into a preformed stand-up pouch which provides total food security for dry and moist food products.

In November the pouch earnt a Green Apple Environment Award in the international campaign supporting eco-friendly practices. Finalists were presented with trophies and certificates at the UK House of Parliament on November 12 – having already battled against 500 nominations.

It was the second award in a matter of weeks – with the Earthpouch having taken first place in the Resource Efficient Pack of the Year category at the UK Packaging Awards, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London in October.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, added: “We’re now working with a number of companies, in many different sectors, and I think it’s fair to say Earthpouch will be on a shelf near you very soon… the awards gained us some great exposure.

“One of the great things about the Earthpouch is it is also cost-effective, often environmentally-friendly packaging comes at a cost, with Earthpouch that’s not the case, there really are no negatives. We’ve been in the packaging industry long enough to know that companies just can’t absorb higher costs.

“We have customers packaging a variety of things, from cereals and nuts to protein powders and confectionary, and that list is growing by the month.”

The Earthpouch is just one of a range of compostable/recyclable products and packaging solutions Sirane has developed over the years – and it has been placed in our Earth Packaging range: compostable; recyclable and sustainable.

Recent additions include Earthfilm and Earthbag – the same film as used in the Earthpouch but on a reel for flow-wrap or in a bag format. We’ve also added barrier version of the material – with high-barrier soon to be introduced to the market.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, added: “Our Earth Packaging range also includes compostable absorbent pads, paper-based pads which can be recycled, and bio-polymers which are compostable and can extend shelf-life in fresh produce.

“For anyone wanting to remove unnecessary plastics solutions are out there, and there’s companies like us working constantly on improving those solutions. If you’re serious about going plastic free, then why not give us a call today?”

FOOD PACKAGING: Absorbent solutions for a whole range of applications

Sirane offers a wide range of absorbent pads and soakers

ABSORBENCY is a key requirement in many different food packaging applications and Sirane’s supplies a wide range of absorbent products on a global basis.

Whether it is absorbent pads for meat, poultry, fruit, cheese or seafood, ovenable pads, fish crate liners or tray dividers, absorbency forms an integral part of our food packaging range.

With additional manufacturing now taking place in Poland, Russia and Mexico, and Sirane also now operating in Australia and South Africa, it doesn’t matter whereabouts in the world you are based, Sirane is in a position to help meet your absorbency requirements.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Absorbency and absorbent products is one of Sirane's core strengths, and the company manufactures a wide range of customised absorbent products. We can supply all types of absorbency levels and types, including liquid, blood, odour and ethylene – you name it, and we have a solution for absorbing it.

“Our absorbent pads can be supplied with integrated odour control and anti-bacterial/anti-microbial or anti-fungal properties where required. We can offer a wide range of sizes, absorbency levels and formats, and tailor our products to suit your exact needs.

“Whether absorbency is used to help extend shelf-life or improve the appearance of the product, there is something in Sirane’s Dri-Fresh range that will do the job.”

As a development company, Sirane is always looking to better what it has and further improve what we offer - our new absorbent pad technology that delivers anti-microbial properties into the pack is the most recent example of that ethos in practice.

Sirane’s new Dri-Fresh ABM/V/S pads are for meat, soft fruit and seafood, and contain a blend of natural bio-flavonoids and organic acids which work together to extend shelf-life. Together with the absorbency within the pads, they offer an outstanding level of protection.

AB pads are offering not just the shelf-life extension that using an absorbent pad will bring, but additional shelf-life extension on top – in some cases this is many days.

The technology can be supplied as standard absorbent pads or incorporated into many of our other pads including our odour-absorbing pads, absorbent inter-leavers and Ice-Mats. The AB technology is activated by moisture – so only functions when needed.

Simon Balderson added: “There are clear differences between meat, poultry, fish and fruit, in terms of the way they degrade and what causes the degradation to happen. We have ABM for meat, ABV for soft-fruits and ABS for seafood… the technology is fundamentally the same, we just modify the technology to fit with the needs of the particular sector.

“With soft-fruit for example, with little in the way of protective skin, it is vulnerable to fungal and bacterial degradation. Similarly, with meat, fish and seafood, reducing microbes and bacteria can be hugely beneficial – in all cases, better shelf-life is the goal.

“The combination of flavonoids which are anti-oxidants and anti-microbial, with organic acids including citric acid and ascorbic acids is harmless, as all elements are found naturally within fruit. It is clean, simple, and effective. Nature itself often has the answers.”

Other recent absorbent product developments include our Soft-Hold pad for soft-fruit – a pad which is both absorbent and cushioned, offering the fruit much more protection. We’ve also developed a product which allows an ovenable absorbent pad to deliver flavours during the cooking process. We’ve released this to the market with smoke (hickory and a wood blend) as the flavours offered – but we’re already working on additional flavours.

We also manufacture an anti-slip absorbent floor mat – sold mainly into medical and healthcare, but recently we’ve also sold mats into food production facilities – for example cheese making plants, where wet floors are a problem in certain stages of the process.

Simon Balderson said: “Health and safety in the workplace is just as important in food production as it is in operation theatres, and anti-slip absorbent floor mats are a great solution for any working environment where fluid could become a hazard.

“If you’re needing absorbency, then Sirane is the market leader. If it can be done, we’re the company to make it happen, so why not give us the chance to help sort your problems?

“Whereas most companies are manufacturing operations supplying a range of absorbent products – which of course we can also do from our range of standard absorbent products – Sirane’s NPD team is happy to look at your individual requirements and design and develop an absorbent solution perfect for you and your customers.”
