REUSABLE BAGS: Our thermally-insulated bags are more environmentally-friendly than you'd think

Thermally-insulated reusable Bags

SIRANE’S thermally-insulated reusable bags keep chilled food cold – and hot food hot. They’re also probably a lot more environmentally-friendly than you’d realised…

The bags form part of our Earth Packaging range, a range of products that we have put together which are good for the environment: either recyclable, sustainable or compostable.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Thermally-insulated reusable bags for part of our Earth Packaging range, which in the current climate, being a plastic bag, some people might find a bit odd… but we’ve added it to the range because we feel it is ‘green’.

“It’s made from just one component, polyethylene – the handle, film and insulation are all made from polyethylene - which means it is easy to recycle. In fact, it’s the only bag of its type which has been endorsed by the UK Recycling Association.

“Studies show that a paper bag would have to be used at least 4 times to have less environmental impact than a plastic bag, and for most paper bags this is almost impossible.

“Furthermore, it can be re-used again and again. This is a durable bag which is made to last.

“It’s even possible to replace some of the virgin polyethylene with a waste sea shell product, so compared to the insulated woven PP products out there, it’s a far more eco-friendly solution. After a long life, the bags can just be put in with the recycling.

“Plastic bags also use less energy manufacture, and cause less pollution during the manufacture process, than plastic. So, in this case, plastic is the best option…”

Used by supermarket shoppers and small independent food outlets alike, the thermally-insulated bags are a reusable bag ideal for transporting fresh good home, delivery services, marketing and promotion - with many people opting for their own bespoke ‘branded’ bag.

Sirane’s insulated bags come with a unique handle designed to make the bags comfortable for the consumer to carry – they’re the bag your customers will reach for… which means your brand will gain visibility again and again as the customer reuses the bag.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Whether you’re a supermarket or a farm-shop, selling fresh meat or hot-food, insulated bags could be the answer. We can custom-brand or supply with generic print, and digitally printing allows for shorter print runs.

“Our anti-bacterial option can also protect customers long-term against harmful bacteria.”

The ‘danger zone’ for food is between 15OC and 50OC, during which rapid microbial growth takes place - and keeping food away from this temperature zone can prevent food-borne illnesses. However, re-usable bags themselves can also become carriers of harmful bacteria, so an integrated anti-bacterial technology protects against bacteria build-up.

Active anti-bacterial properties (from Biomaster) are built into the insulated bags during the manufacturing process, so the protection will last for as long as the bag does...

“No-one really considers the health implications of re-using shopping bags,” added Simon. “but scientific studies show bacteria build-up can be potentially harmful, and that there’s often as much bacteria on the outside of meat packaging as on the inside. There’s advice out there that people should wash bags-for-life, but how many people do this?

“Anti-bacterial thermally-insulated bags stop customers having to even worry about this – it doesn’t matter how many times they re-use the bag, they are protected.”

Both off-the-shelf and custom-printed versions of the bag are available, and there are a range of potential sizes offered, including bags small enough to be lunch-bags.

OVERSEAS: Sirane Australia opening in Melbourne as group expansion continues ‘down under’

Sirane is opening up in Australia

SIRANE’S opening-up down under – with an expansion into Australia.

The new year will see the launch of Sirane Australia, as we look to take our food packaging technologies to new markets on the other side of the world.

Simon Balderson, Sirane Group MD, said: “We have been looking at Australia for a while now, and the time seems right. We’ve a strong team in place, and they are already starting to generate some serious interest in Sirane.

“Many of our food packaging products, such as absorbent pads, cooking bags etc, have potential the world over, particularly in a developed market like Australia.”

Sirane is an innovative UK-based packaging development-to-manufacture company, specialised in absorbency, ovenable and microwaveable materials, shelf-life extension, microwave susceptor and protective food packaging. We also offer plastic-free packaging, and a wide range of bags, pouches and films.

We have additional overseas operations in South Africa, Poland, Mexico and Russia – and it is our Sirane Southern Africa team who are spearheading the project. Stacey Loader and Polly Duffee - directors of Sirane Southern Africa - will cover Melbourne, Queensland, Tasmania and the Northern Territories, while a new member of the team, Nathan Balderson, will cover South Australia and NSW.

Stacey Loader said: “Sirane Australia is a project two years in the making, and we’re very excited now it is finally happening. It’s a great country, and great people, and we’re keen to really get going and show off Sirane’s range.

“Sirane has some amazing food packaging solutions, some of which are already sold in Australia, so we know the appetite will be there for what Sirane can offer.”

Sirane Australia, which will be based in Melbourne, will exhibit at AusPack in March – a first exhibition and a chance for the food industry to meet our team.

Simon Balderson added: “We anticipate - and indeed already have - a lot of interest in Australia in our various compostable and plastic-free packaging solutions, as eco-friendly packaging is important there, just as it is here in the UK.

“But there’s also likely to be strong interest across all our food packaging ranges, especially from food producers, packers, and from the large retailers.”

Sirane’s plastic-free packaging ‘Earthpouch’ recently won a top prize at the UK Packaging Awards – taking first place in the Resource Efficient Pack of the Year category. It’s also won a Green Apple Environment Award.

We’ve also launched our Earth Packaging range – a range of packaging solutions which are all either compostable, sustainable or 100% recyclable. The Earth Packaging range includes absorbent pads, bags, pouches and packaging films.

Our Dri-Fresh range includes a wide range of absorbent packaging, including standard absorbent pads, odour-absorbent pads, cushioned pads and ovenable pads, and we offer solutions perfect for meat, seafood, fruit and more.

Sirane’s Sira-Cook range includes steam-cooking bags, BBQ & oven bags & nylon roasting-bag materials, with options including stand-up bags, self-seal and heat-seal. These are popular with both food producers and supermarkets

Our other food packaging ranges include Sira-Crisp susceptor-based packaging for crisping food in a microwave, Tuff-Hold boneguard, Sira-Flex papers and films for shelf-life extension, and Sira-Form for better food product presentation.

Sirane Australia will also have access to products from Sirane’s other divisions, most notably our horticultural products and medical/healthcare ‘Enaris’ range. These ranges include products such as compostable plant pots, absorbent flower pouches, anti-slip absorbent floor mats, 95 kPa specimen transport bags and more.

AusPack takes place in Melbourne from March 26-29 – find our stand at A226.
